How Our Vehicle Steering & Suspension Work

First off, steering and suspension work together as the SAS system for a safe ride.

The SAS structure is a complicated set of levers, joints, and gears to steer. Plus, our car sits on various leaf or coil springs and hydraulic shock absorbers or struts to keep us comfortably suspended in air.

RSC Automotive Repair Center LLC will deal with all this SAS stuff for you.

Common Problems for Shocks & Springs plus Repair Costs

The steering, shocks, and springs combine to maneuver our car, absorb street bumps, and maximize traction for each tire. This all affects the tire/brake system as well as gives customers a soft, quiet, and stable ride.

Here's the top priority components:

SHOCKS. Oil-filled cylinders absorb the bounce before reaching tires. If not, our vehicles become bumpy, noisy & hard to control. This auto repair is $900 or more.

COIL SPRINGS. These carry the weight of the auto and rarely need to be replaced, except after an accident or if the truck is lifted. The repair cost is upwards of $700.

BUSHINGS. Connect chassis to the front tires & absorb vibration. Auto repair (about $300) is needed when you hear a metal squeaking or our tires pull to the side.

BALL JOINTS. These connect to the steering and help to absorb the vibration. A dull banging sound and excess tire wear indicate trouble. Repairs are around $350.

SWAY LINKS. They redistribute weight to all wheels on turns. Vehicles will be noisy on bumps with excess body roll on turns... if this $200 auto repair service is needed.

TIE RODS. These control a vehicles maneuverability by connecting steering wheel to the tires. Get service for noisy front wheels, poor steering or tire wear. Cost $250+

The auto chassis must be properly suspended above the wheels for customer enjoyment and safety. This also makes for a healthy steering, tire, and brake system.

RSC Automotive Repair Center LLC is here to service your vehicle.

Evolution of High-Quality Shocks and Struts for Our Car or Truck

🕰️

Suspending vehicles on a set of road-holding (air-filled) tires and soft energy-absorbing springs is quite a revolution. The physics of customer protection, street comfort, and the forces of tire friction is a complicated design equation.

The team of technicians at RSC Automotive Repair Center are here to help you understand your vehicle!

Let's look at the century-long car innovations... starting with steering:

  • Early cars used a stick to steer but by 1898 a circular ship format became popular.
  • Manual steering was cumbersome, dangerous, and not the best experience for drivers.
  • Power steering however, did not start becoming standard equipment until the late 1960s.
  • Whether it's Audi, BMW, or Mercedes... the steering wheel is now our device control center.

Now we'll serve up some AAA nuggets on the history of energy absorbers:

  • Ancient Egyptian pharaohs used primitive springs & shocks in chariots thousands of years ago.
  • Leaf springs advanced to coils in the late 1800s when steel became much easier to manufacture.
  • By 1906 the Brush Brothers Two-Seat Runabout was a masterpiece of coil & shock engineering.
  • The coil/shock spring system floundered until General Motors used them on each wheel in 1934.
  • Before this evolution, drivers could be dangerously tossed from our seat by a big pothole/bump.

By the way, struts are slightly different. The oil-filled hydraulic energy dispersing cylinder is wrapped inside the spring. This means the shock and coil are all serviced as one piece.

*** Most of our modern front-wheel drive vehicles use struts, but there's no right or wrong shock absorber system.

The RSC team of auto repair mechanics—at our San Clemente facilities—understand the importance of getting our customers high-quality shocks and struts. There are lots of auto repair shops in & around San Clemente so give this owner-operated auto shop a call at  949-276-5332.
