Dana Point History
Acjachemen people were the Native Americans who—due to rich natural resources—originally lived along the California coastline of Dana Point. The 18th century brought European settlers to our region, which was part of a huge local unit called the Rancho Niguel land-grant.
The 19th century brought significant changes to this spectacular paradise.
Prior to the 1849 Gold Rush, the Fur Rush of 1825 had an even more profound impact on opening up California. Wealth-seeking pioneers came to Dana Point from near and far.
Richard Henry Dana Jr. was a merchant seaman who followed fur traders along the California coast to his favorite: Dana Point ⛵ As a lawyer, he later became an abolitionist politician, who advocated for underserved people from downtrodden seamen to slaves on the run.
He was also a renowned writer for his classic memoir, Two Years Before the Mast which chronicled Dana’s voyage around Cape Horn through the “terrifying storms and profound beauty” of winter in Antarctica. Moby Dick author Herman Melville famously wrote a blurb about his friend’s exploits in the book White Jacket.
The city of Dana Point was named after this explorer and influential politician.
By the 1920’s Sydney H. Woodruff purchased vast amounts of land from the Capistrano family. He then began to develop Capistrano Beach and what is now Dana point.
Off the beaten path halfway between LA and San Diego, this sleepy little community grew slowly until construction of Dana Point Harbor early in the 1970s. This attracted water enthusiasts, ocean tourists, and local lovers of our hometown "beachy" atmosphere!
