RSC Owners ~ Past & Present

Juan & Luis both grew up working on cars with a deep joy for fixing things. Their ultimate dream, though, is to provide trusted auto repair. That means cost-effective, streamlined, and done right.

These partners met when they worked at another local SoCal auto repair shop. That was way back in the early 2000’s.

Let's share a bit about the history on them and their business.

💥 Juan’s life began in Guanajuato Mexico where he and four siblings lived in a tiny one bedroom apartment. Mother was a house cleaner while his father worked as a gardener by day and a baker at night to gain US citizenship.

The whole family moved to America seven years later!

San Clemente, California is where Juan grew up. He started at Las Palmas Elementary, and graduated from Saddleback College. Right away, he started doing auto repair here in town.

Along the way, Juan fell in love. He and Crystal married and now have 3 wonderful children.

💥 Luis had a similar journey, but started a little earlier. He was born in Central Mexico before moving to Texas for his High School years.

From there, it was straight to the beautiful beaches of Southern California. He and his wife have three adult children as well as four active grandchildren who all make them very happy!

Luis started his profession as a mechanic long before Juan in the 90s. That wisdom and experience helped mentor Juan when he started in the early 2000s.

A decade later, this new auto shop idea began to take shape...

Impossible Dreams

Against all odds, everything started coming together in 2012. Though the “Hand of God” seemed to be on this new venture, it was far from easy!

There were 3 problems they faced:

☑️ NO MONEY—Could only scrape together $200.

☑️ NO HISTORY—Zero track record in business.

☑️ NO FACILITY—Didn’t have shop or license.

This is where the story gets interesting!

Mid-2012, Juan took a small step of faith and began looking for a place to set up shop. He showed it to his wife, but got cold feet because Juan knew there was no way he could afford the extra rent.

Crystal (his wife) was not so willing to give up!

She told Juan, “They weren't gonna leave until he at least tried calling the phone number on the sign.” Low and behold, the landlord answered and agreed to show them inside.

Juan shared about his love for auto repair and his work as a pastor at San Clemente Presbyterian Church. They immediately hit it off... until the landlord asked one important question.

How much do you have saved up to start this new business? 💸

His answer quickly changed that conversation. Juan told the whole truth and said "I only have $100 in my checking account.”

Needless to say, the landlord immediately lost interest.

"Great communication during a difficult repair process. Worked with me to fix a transmission issue and kept me informed on everything that was happening. Held my car for a couple weeks even tho warranty company was taking a long time to determine my coverage."

"I heard about RSC Automotive Repair Center while reading the rave reviews they got online. I finally made an appointment, worked with Manny, and requested an oil change. After what seemed like just a few minutes I asked if I could bring my car back for them to review it for any work that needed to be done. To my surprise , they had already done a thorough inspection, texted a copy of the results to me, and I was handed a list of their recommendations. Manny and everyone at the center were friendly, knowledgeable and very professional and Manny even offered to work with me to break the service dates down to meet my budget. I am very impressed with RSC Automotive Repair Center, am happy to have found a new home for my car to get serviced, and will shout their praises to everyone."

Overcoming Adversity

Juan had no money, but he did have a plan. The property owner was heading off to a family vacation and said he’d be willing to talk again after he returned.

All this wishful young man needed... was to show he had a serious business plan. If so, the landlord said he might consider renting to Juan when he got back in a month.

Well, guess who got busy?

Juan & Luis were both committed to this business idea. They each sold their home at a loss, drained their 401(k), and applied for a business license as partners.

Now they needed to pull everything together!

The retirement savings gave them a little working capital. But they had huge expenses to get this startup off the ground.

This kind landowner saw their efforts and took a big risk on these two budding entrepreneurs. By the grace of God, it seemed like this outlandish desire to open a business may come to fruition.

Then came the biggest roadblock of all. 🚧

Juan was working as a part-time pastor of the Spanish language ministry. Unfortunately, the Great Recession hit really hard and caused severe budget cuts. There was no money left over for his Hispanic American Ministry.

Without that vital extra income, the new auto repair venture was even more risky. The partners discussed this major setback with their families.

The conclusion for these Christian men, “God was involved every step of the way, so if it’s supposed to happen… it will.”

Juan & Luis decided to take a massive leap of faith!

Here's what started to come about:

  1. New landlord waived the security deposit.
  2. Equipment makers offered extra financing.
  3. Juan’s pastor made a HUGE announcement.

That extra security deposit went toward a down payment for state of the art tools and software. Vendors financed all the first-class equipment needed to ensure the best possible customer service. And, his pastors/mentors heartfelt message instantly brought in dozens of auto repair customers.

First Day In New Shop

Tenacious Faithfulness

Things finally came together in September 2012. Juan & Luis combined skills, pooled savings, and moved forward.

This was a well-planned (but risky) BIG investment in their future.

All the pics up-top are a quick glimpse into what RSC looks like today!

It was anything but easy—and often took 15 to 18 hour workdays—yet these two dedicated guys persevered. From migrant workers to "American Dream," they pulled themselves up by their bootstraps... to be the premier auto repair shop in Orange County!

That first holiday was rough. They couldn't even afford a Christmas tree. Presents for adults and kids alike were pretty sparse too.

But they all survived and the business began to thrive!

After 10 years of consistent persistence, Juan & Luis achieved their goal. They have a stellar team of mechanics, top-notch diagnostic tools, and the best auto shop on the planet.

The hard work had paid off. They were both, once again, able to buy a home for their growing families. 🏡

The story is far from over, though. This team is ready to continue improving for all the existing and future RSC customers!
