How Car's Electrical System Works & Where is Alternator Located?

A car is like a puzzle with various services coming together as one:

  • BATTERY: The most obvious piece in our charging system is a car's battery. Dead batteries leave us feeling helpless, frustrated, and usually late for work.
  • ALTERNATOR: Attached to engine front, this power source is turned by our serpentine belt. It stores energy in the battery for computers, lights, and other electrical components.
  • STARTER: This vital piece of equipment has high electrical demands. It ignites our engine and gets us to the next adventure in our busy schedule!

Bad Starter, Dynamo, or Battery?

Electrical issues are challenging. It's hard to know what causes your car to lose power and need replacement. These systems all work hand in hand to generate and store energy, so it's crucial to identify where the electrical problems lie.

Is it the starter, car battery or bad alternator?

It could also be spark plugs, ignition coils, or any other electrical components. Point is, a dead battery may NOT mean we get that battery replaced. First step is a full electrical system test before investing in the wrong—and wasteful—repair. That kind of trustworthy service is why customers keep coming back to us!

Common Electrical Problems & Repair Costs

A car's electrical system is fundamental to get us going and keep us comfortable. Essential electrical components include the computer and ignition system plus lights, stereo, windows, and locks for comfort.

Typical symptoms for electrical issues:

  • CAR WON'T START. This type of auto repair could be a faulty starter, battery, power generator, firing solenoid, ignition coils, or control module. Each repair or replacement is different but the cost will range from $300 - $1,000 depending on which service is needed.
  • LOW ENERGY IN CAR'S ELECTRICAL SYSTEM. We're talking dim headlights, broken radio, slow windows, flickering lights, etc. This fix could be in the low hundreds of dollars or indicate BIG💲💲electrical problems due to rodents or corrosion requiring a full wiring replacement.
  • VEHICLE STALLS OR MISFIRES. Typically involves spark plugs, ignition coils, and distributor or energy controller from a vehicle's electrical system. Signs for servicing are rough idling, gas guzzling, and warning lights... with a cost of replacement around $200+/cylinder.

  • Plug-in hybrids are more powerful.

ELECTRIC VEHICLES:

Benefits:

  • Excellent acceleration.
  • Little scheduled maintenance.

Drawbacks:

  • Higher car battery replacement cost.
  • Low range makes long trips difficult.

Evolution of Electrical Systems

First generation automobiles had no need for batteries until horns arrived in the early 1900's. A dynamo was soon designed to generate voltage from the flywheel. The 1950's, then, took us from a 6 to 12-volt electrical system. That way, a better starter could be built for new high-compression motors.

Chrysler revolutionized the industry with an alternator in 1960.

Cars were then able to handle the high electrical demands of our modern creature comforts like radio, AC, and windows. The same combo of a rotational energy source + car battery still makes and stores our power today.
